The Problem

Does any of this sound familiar?

You're a strong leader. You care deeply about your team. But nobody ever taught you how to lead in a world where most communication happens through a screen.

•
You sent a quick message — professional, efficient — and somehow it landed wrong. Now two of your nurses are tense and you're not sure why.
•
Your night shift feels disconnected from the rest of the team, but you can't quite put your finger on how to fix it.
•
You wrote "Can we talk?" without context. By the time you got to work, three people had assumed the worst.
•
Your team spans four generations — Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers — and they respond differently. You're exhausted trying to navigate it.
•
You're managing conflict, EHR messages, group texts, and policy changes often after hours with no framework for any of it.
The Solution

Introducing Learn at Lunch

Built on Erica Dhawan's groundbreaking research on digital body language — adapted for the specific realities of nursing leadership.

Sessions fit within your lunch break. The cohort is capped at 8 leaders. Every single week, you leave with something you can use before your next shift. This isn't a webinar. It's a structured, peer-driven learning experience designed to change how you communicate.

The Curriculum

Your 8-Week Journey

Every session follows the same rhythm: concept and framing, peer discussion, and one specific commitment.

WeeK 1 45 min

What Is Digital Body Language — and What Is Yours?

Introduction to Erica Dhawan's framework and the four laws of digital body language. Participants complete their Digital Communication Style Self-Assessment and share first impressions with the group. We establish the cohort's norms and accountability partner pairings.

Takeaway: A clear-eyed picture of your current digital communication patterns — and at least one insight about how you may be landing differently than you intend.
WeeK 2 45 min

Your Digital Leadership Brand

How does your team actually read your messages? We examine tone, punctuation, response time, and brevity — and what each of these signals to staff at different levels. Pairs share their observations from the week's commitment and the group identifies common patterns.

Takeaway: A concrete understanding of the impression your digital communication creates — and the specific habits that may be undermining your intent.
WeeK 3 60 min

Law 1 & 2 — Value Visibly and Communicate Carefully

The deepest dive of the program. We work through the first two laws in tandem: how to show appreciation, recognition, and warmth through digital channels (Value Visibly), and how to eliminate the ambiguity and anxiety that terse or unclear messages create (Communicate Carefully). Real message examples from participants are used as case studies — anonymized and shared with permission.

Takeaway: Templates and language for recognition, appreciation, and difficult-to-word messages. A personal list of your communication habits that may be creating unnecessary anxiety in your team.
WeeK 4 45 min

Communicating Across Generations — Without Losing Your Mind

Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers have fundamentally different expectations around response time, tone, formality, and what it means when a leader goes silent. We map those differences, examine how they play out in real nursing units, and build practical strategies for meeting each generation without abandoning who you are.

Takeaway: A generational communication cheat sheet tailored to your specific team mix. Strategies for setting expectations across generations in a way that feels fair rather than exhausting.
WeeK 5 45 min

Psychological Safety — Built or Broken One Message at a Time

Psychological safety — the belief that it is safe to speak up, ask questions, and admit mistakes — is directly shaped by how leaders communicate digitally. We examine the specific message patterns that build it and the ones that silently erode it, including the role of EHR communication in creating or damaging a culture of safety.

Takeaway: A self-assessment of how your communication practices affect psychological safety on your unit. Three specific language shifts that signal openness and invitation rather than judgment or closure.
WeeK 6 60 min

Law 3 — Collaborate Confidently: Conflict, Hard Conversations, and Channel Discipline

The longest session of the program. We tackle three interconnected skills: navigating conflict and de-escalation through digital channels; delivering feedback, correction, and difficult news in writing without it landing as cold or punitive; and the Channel Selection Framework — a practical guide to when to text, email, call, page, or walk over. We also address the emotional labor of absorbing and managing digital miscommunication as a leader.

Takeaway: A Channel Selection Framework personalized to your unit. Scripted language for digital conflict de-escalation. A framework for feedback messages that are clear, kind, and unambiguous
WeeK 7 45 min

Law 4 — Trust Totally: Communicating Up, Across, and After Hours

Two critical leadership skills addressed together: how to communicate upward to administration and directors in a way that gets read, gets responses, and demonstrates leadership maturity — and how to set and maintain clear off-hours communication boundaries with your team in a way that actually sticks and protects everyone. We also address the documentation culture problem: when clinical documentation becomes a communication tool, and what it costs when it does.

Takeaway: Templates for upward communication — the email to your CNO, the follow-up that doesn't feel desperate, the message that positions you as a strategic thinker. A script for communicating off-hours expectations to your team.
WeeK 2 60 min

Building Something That Lasts — Your Team Communication Charter

The culminating session. Each participant arrives having drafted a Team Communication Charter — a co-created, living document that articulates their unit's norms, channel expectations, response time standards, and off-hours boundaries. The group gives feedback on each charter. Participants share their biggest shift over the 8 weeks. Accountability partners discuss how they will stay connected after the program ends.

Takeaway: A finalized Team Communication Charter ready to share with your unit. A clear sense of your own growth as a digital leader. A peer network and accountability partner relationship that you own beyond this program.
